With his third victory in a
row, the Cuban Lazaro Bruzon was today at the forefront of five
Grand Masters (GM) that command the Open Chess Tournament in
Baku, Azerbaijan.
Bruzón, tenth of the initial list with 2,673 ELO points,
defeated with black pieces his Russian counterpart Sergey Volkov
(2,607), due to which he is second in the tie between those who
have three points.
In 40 moves with a queen's pawn opening, Bruzón showed total
superiority over the board and finished off with an attack on
the opponent's king, where the Queen, Castles and Knights were
involved.
The other GMs with three points are the Bulgarian Ivan
Cheparinov (2,669), as winner against Spaniard Francisco Vallejo
(2,724) - Russian Evgeny Romanov (2,624), Belarusian Sergei
Zhigalko (2,689 ) and Georgia's Mikhail Mchedlishvili (2,618).
The GM Leinier Dominguez (2,719) also won, completing the
presence of Cuba, beating in 47 moves with a Spanish opening the
local International Master (IM) Sanan Dovliatov (2,411), to
reach 2.5points.
The idol of Guines, which appears seventh, dominated the center
of the board with white pieces, with a combination of pawns and
a pair of knights, which joined the good work of castles in the
kingside columns.
Leinier shared the second round table with GM Sarhan Guliev
house (2,500) and places him in the group that follows those at
the top, with the host GM Mamedyarov Shakhriyar (2,765), number
one ranking at the start.
On Tuesday, Bruzón had white pieces against Cheparinov, a rival
who he knows from other tournaments, a panorama which will be
repeated by Leinier as opponent of Russian Dmitry Andreikin
(2,696).
With black, the Cuban will try to retaliate after the setback in
the past Capablanca Memorial, when he could only draw with the
European, reports the AIN.
